Indonesia Joins Battle Against COVID-19

Following the announcement of two confirmed cases of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Indonesia, The Health Ministry has said it will now assign its regional labs to test people suspected of carrying the novel coronavirus amid concerns that it has not been proactive enough in detecting infected people to prevent its spread, the Jakarta Post reports.

Kompas.com has reported that the condition of the two patients has improved since first admitted to RSPI Sulianti Suroso and there are at least 247 people that is currently being observed for the virus in Jakarta, Depok, Bekasi and Tangerang.

The government has also announced a US$744 million subsidy for the travel industry that is expected to boost consumer spending and reinvigorate Indonesia's tourism industry which has been hit hard by the COVID-19, the Jakarta globe reports.  On top of that, there is also Rp 99 billion in subsidies for airlines and travel agencies to discount tickets or travel packages for foreign tourists. While for for domestic tourists, the government will provide a 30 percent discount on flights to 10 tourist destinations, applicable to 25 percent of seats available in March, April and May.

Following the announcement, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has withheld permit for large-crowd events and will review those that have been issued for imminent events. A number of major events coming up this month have officially been postponed including the Child Baby Maternity Expo,  88Rising's Heads in The Clouds, Foals live concert,  Khalid Free Spirit Tour .

Netizens across the social media have reported some level of panic buying in some stores, while 'anti-virus' essentials like hand sanitizers and mask in Jakarta have truly become the hottest items of the week; but in keeping ourselves and or family safe from the virus the WHO advises to remember the basics: wash your hands regularly, maintain social distancing, avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth, practice respiratory hygiene (covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing), AND, if you have any fever, cough, and difficulty of breathing, seek medical help ASAP! (Here's check our list of international medical clinics in Jakarta).

Stay safe and healthy, friends!
