To curb the spread of COVID-19 ahead of Ramadan, President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo announced his decision to finally ban the Idul Fitri mudik starting Friday (April 24), while sanctions [for violators] will be enforced starting May 7, the Jakarta Post reports.
The ban follows a Transportation Ministry field research and survey that shows 24 percent of respondents still have plans to travel back to their hometown. Traditionally, some 20 million people from Greater Jakarta, the current epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in Indonesia, travel to their hometowns every Idul Fitri.
With the mudik ban, the government will not allow public transport and private vehicles from coming out of the Covid-19 red zone (pandemic epicentrum), except for logistics transportation, health workers, and people working in banking services.
