Dear Readers, The government has decided to keep both October 28 and October 30, 2020 as cuti bersama (collective leave) days to celebrate the Prophet Muhammad's birthday, which means Indonesians will have a five-day holiday from October 28th to November 1st. Griffith University Epidemiologist Dicky Budiman reminded us that the long holiday could be the next major test for Indonesia in fighting COVID-19. The government has also announced next year's list of holidays that consists of 15 national holidays and 7 cuti bersama. Following a flood and landslide that hit residents of Jagakarsa earlier this month, the Jakarta Regional Government is now banning housing complexes to be located along river banks and will evict residents or settlers that would not cooperate, the Jakarta Post reports. The deputy governor said the Jakarta administration would attempt to mitigate flooding during the rainy season through a "river normalization" program. A great move especially considering that the rainy season is just getting started; The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts rain with lightning and strong winds in a number of areas in DKI Jakarta throughout the day and all through the following week, with chances of rain ranging in 70 to 80 percent.
